Concept :

 

  • Sulphur dioxide is prepared when sulphur burns in oxygen in a large scale.
  • Sulphur dioxide is prepared in the laboratory by heating copper turnings and Conc. H2SO4.
  • It is colourless gas with pungent smell, 25 times heavier than air, and highly soluble in water.
  • It oxidizes hydrogen sulphide to sulphur.
  • It reduces halogens into their respective hydracids.
  • It also reduces ferric to ferrous, pink coloured KMnO4 to colourless solution, red orange K2Cr2O7 to green colour chromium sulphate.
  • It bleaches moist coloured flowers and delicate materials.
  • It is used to preserve fruits and also employed in the preparation of sodium bisulphate and calcium bisulphate.

The following pieces of apparatus are displayed and pupils are asked to select suitable apparatus by seeing the chart.

Different types of flask, test tubes, gas collecting jars, bent tubes, thistle funnel, etc.

 

Different chemicals such as Cu+H2SO4, MnO2+HCl, NaCl+H2SO4, K2Cr2O7, FeCl3, etc. are displayed and pupils are asked to choose.

 

The experimental setup is arranged. Pupils are instructed to observe the setup of the experiment and draw the diagram.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Copper turning are taken in a round bottomed flask and conc. H2SO4 is added through the thistle funnel. The flask is heated. The coming gas is passed into wash bottle containing Conc. H2SO4, which observes traces of water. The pure gas is collected by the upward displacement of air

I. Action of water: SO2 is an acid oxide. It dissolves in water forms sulphurous acid.

 

SO2+H2O → H2SO3

 

SO2 reacts with alkali to form salt and water

II. Action with Metals : Magnesium burns in SO2, Magnesium oxide and magnesium sulphide are produced.

3Mg + SO2 → 2MgO + MgS

 

III. Sulphur dioxide oxidizes hydrogen sulphide to sulphur

H2S + SO2 → 2H2O + 3S

 

IV. Reduction Reaction : SO2 reduces halogens to their respective hydracids.

a. SO2 + 2H2O + Cl2 → H2SO4 + 2HCl

SO2 + 2H2O + Br2 → H2SO4 + 2HBr
